Abstract
Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is an idiopathic age-related eye disease affecting 1-2% of the population aged over 40 years. It is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. The disease is characterized by attrition of retinal ganglion cells (RGC), abnormal intraocular pressure (IOP) and elevated aqueous humor levels of transforming growth factor beta-2 (TGFβ2). The pathogenesis of POAG and source and mechanism of elevated aqueous TGFβ2 are largely unknown. Animal models resembling human POAG are also lacking . Current glaucoma therapy can seek only to target IOP for reduction rather than modify pathological mechanisms underlying the disease.
To study molecular mechanism and pathogenesis of POAG and its drug development, translational platform is critical and we have been working on the various in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo models. Using various platforms, we can study in the range of the molecular mechanism of physiological and pathological pathway in the cellular level to in vivo response.
