Abstract
Grain legumes including soybean, dry bean, and pea are economically important crops in the United States. Substantial yield losses of legumes are attributed to fungal diseases caused by soil-borne pathogens such as Fusarium spp., Rhizoctonia spp., and Pythium spp. and soil- and air-borne pathogen Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. To improve fungal disease management, understanding of host plant-pathogen interactions and responses of pathogens to fungicides are crucial. This seminar will emphasize projects related to plant-pathogen interactions (pea-Sclerotinia sclerotiorum) using transcriptome analysis and genetic engineering to understand Sclerotinia pathogenicity and pea resistance. In addition, the response of soybean fungal pathogen (Fusarium virguliforme, the causal agent of soybean sudden death syndrome) to a fungicide (fluopyram) and management strategies of the disease will be discussed.
